Lisa Lowe: Metaphors of Globalization
Lisa Lowe's talk on the Metaphors of Globalization ventured farther than my knowledge could handle for the most part. I was intrigued by her opening slide depicting an art piece at the Tate Modern in London, having only visited the gallery itself this month. The vastness of its size shocked me, and I found her insight into viewing it from different perspectives and angles to be interesting. I was expecting her to bring up the subject of McDonaldisation, as it is the inevitable subject to bring up when discussing the matter of globalization. I agree with the cultural homogenization and commercial saturation that McDonalisation has had on our world. She also mentioned how time has compressed since the 1960s, when the world was only 1/50th the size it is today. It was something I had not thought of but thinking about it now, seems to be a valid argument. Is globalization really about the deepening between the rich and the poor? It is an interesting comment but I don't necessarily think it is completely true. I could not really relate to the latter part of her talk when she referenced to the movie Babel, having not watched the movie myself.
